Norwegian Metal: Il Tempo Gigante

'Il Tempo Gigante' is a racecar featuring in the Norwegian puppet movie "Flåklypa Grand Prix" (or Pinchcliffe Grand Prix as its known internationally) from 1975. The car is based on a design from the Illustrator and author Kjell Aukrust who also contributed to the movie together with animator Ivo Caprino. According to its creator in the movie, Reodor Felgen, "It's built on an old ambulance chassis, it has two engines, one 12 cylinder in the front, which at 11000 revs deliver 800bhp. This in turn starts the turbine engine at the rear which gives an extra kick of about 12000bhp at 18000 revs. Jointly these two engines will produce a boost guranteed to register 5.3 on the Richter Scale."

The movie was a huge success in Norway (I've must have seen it at least 10 times) and they decided to build a full-scale working Il Tempo Gigante based on a Cadillac chassis and with a 454cid engine that packs more than 500bhp. I sat in it once as a kid. Awe-inspiring.
